Sterling Weeping Angel of Amiens Necklace
There are pieces that are simply beautiful and then there are pieces that carry history, grief, and meaning across centuries.
This pendant is a reproduction of the Weeping Angel of Amiens (L’Ange pleureur d’Amiens), originally sculpted in 1628 by Nicolas Blasset for a tomb inside the Amiens Cathedral in France. The image is unmistakable: a cherub rests gently against a human skull, one hand near an hourglass, a quiet, powerful reflection on the passage of time and the fragility of life.
These symbols, known as memento mori, have long served as reminders to cherish what is fleeting and to hold close what truly matters.
During World War I, this angel became something more. Soldiers stationed near Amiens were deeply moved by the sculpture, sending images and small medals like this one home to loved ones. It became a symbol of mourning, remembrance, and the enduring connection between those here and those gone.
We have carefully cast this pendant from an original antique medal, preserving every detail, from the softened edges to the original inscription, “D’APRES N. BLASSET D’AMIENS”—honoring its origin and story.
At one inch in size and cast in solid sterling silver, it carries both presence and quiet weight. Each piece is finished by hand in our Midwest studio, continuing a story that began nearly four centuries ago.
